- Interpretation：The clothes do not make the man. The cowl does not make the monk. The beard does not make the philosopher. For the sake of appearance, don't judge a person. The dress does not make the fair. The beard does not make the philosopher.
- 類義：衣は僧を作らず。数珠（じゅず）ばかりでは和尚はできぬ。
- 反義：馬子にも衣装髪容貌（かみかたち）。
